While Gallimard’s remark highlights the complete coincidence between the eye and the gaze, and therefore the lack precisely of a lure in his relationship with this other woman, Frau Baden’s notion of “getting it” complements his observation by containing sex entirely within the satiable and short-term realm of physical need. Sex with her is but a casual meal, in which the physical body, because it is completely available, remains a mere body. The force of the phallus—and with it fantasy, the lure, and seduction—does not come into play at all.
